Amazon Echo is the latest must-have technology as loads of people are waiting eagerly for it to come to England so they can have it in their homes. But there is an on-going debate on the pros and cons of Amazon Echo so on this page I’m going to discuss some of the factors stopping or increasing the purchase of this new item. Let’s see the debate:
Amazon Echo has been recognised as one of the most geeky and revolutionary home appliance that is an assistant to you in your home. Amazon Echo is a hands-free speaker you control with your voice. A positive result of the Amazon Echo is that it is a dynamic product, furthermore, that means that it is constantly changing and updating which I will be giving and showing you examples of in the latter part of this article of how the Echo is dynamic. It also is able to make you laugh as it has the ability to tell you jokes. The Amazon Echo has the ability to control lights, to switch something on or off and to control thermostats, clever right?
Even though the Echo is constantly updating, it does’t allow users to manage the settings or turn on additional settings without an iPhone, iPad etc… Furthermore the Amazon Echo has other restrictions such as it is not portable and it has to be plugged in at all times. It does not have batteries, which means you are unable to take it outside of your home. As soon as you unplug it, it just turns off. For something as good as Amazon Echo, it has been said that the sound performance is good but not impressive.

However, what is impressive is the fact that it has the capabilities to order domino’s pizza which saves you having to get your mobile to do it or phone up and order. The product is also able to book Uber services and many more. Amazon have recently released ‘Amazon dash buttons,’ which is a WiFi connected device that reorders your certain product with a press of a button. With each dash button, it is paired with the product of your choice so when you are running low, you press the button and it will instantly process it and reorder more of the item. Online shopping without the hassle! Another advantage is that it will hear you from across the room even when music is playing.

On the other hand, the Echo is intelligent and does have a broad range of knowledge but, unlike Apple’s Siri on the iPhone’s and iPad’s etc if it does not understand what you are trying to ask, if will ask you to repeat or perhaps to rephrase. Whereas the Amazon Echo does not do this, therefore, the Echo could possibly give you a misleading or wrong answer. Unlike Siri, the Echo cannot respond to complicated commands or form an opinion and it is unable to do multiple tasks at a time without repeating its name “Alexa.” You cannot have multiple instructions in a single sentence.
In contrary to this, the Echo has a voice training feature that allows the Echo to recognise different voices easily specifically to each of your family members and the voice recognition system is incredibly accurate, responsive and quick, furthermore, the Siri on Apple allows “Hey Siri” but to one specific voice and may not answer to anyone else’s as it doesn’t recognise it. The Echo is a great tool for handicapped people, such as making appointments for the dentist, making and remembering schedules, telling the time, making a phone call or just asking for the weather.
Unlike the internet or Siri, the Echo cannot display visual images also you cannot view the Echo’s answer on a screen so if it is a long, broad answer, you have to remember the information or even ask it again.

In conclusion to this, my verdict is that the Echo is an intelligent, home assistant that produces updates on different news and provides a useful approach to your needs and questions. If plays music of your choice, sets alarms, reminders and schedules and the Amazon wireless dash buttons allow an easier way to online shop making it less stressful. It could be argued that the Amazon Echo is a great, sustainable purchase which will really be helpful especially in the future. However, you cannot take the Echo outside of your home which causes limitations for your ability to ask a question if and when you needed to outside of your home. As the Echo is a dynamic product, you would expect that it is able to answer complicated questions and multitask. Overall, there are some disadvantages of the Amazon Echo but as the product is constantly changing and updating it may change most of those factors.
